If lowering costs is an issue, or you have a brand-new grill you already love, you can use a free-standing grill as part of your outdoor kitchen design. Although you can’t remove the supports and use it like a built-in, you can incorporate your free-standing grill into your design by making a few critical decisions.
Can I use my freestanding grill as a built-in grill?
Yes, you can, and I have done this for clients. You’ll want to make sure of a few things first: if your built-in grill has folding sides to act as a work surface you’ll probably want to remove them. Leaving them on, even folded down, causes some big unsightly gaps between the grill and the surround.
Can you use a Weber grill as a built in?
So, can a Weber grill be built into a structure? The answer is some Weber grills can, and some cannot. We make two models that are designed to be built-in. Both of these models are available in propane or natural gas versions, and are meant to be used exclusively in built-in structures.

Can you use a portable grill on a porch?
Yes, you can. Though it is safe to grill inside your patio, garage, awning, porch, or balcony, it’s always best to only use the grill outside in an open area where nobody can be harmed. This method will reduce the risk of any accidents and allow proper ventilation.
Can I use a gas grill under a covered patio?
Grill-maker Weber offers similar advice: “Always keep your grill at least 5 feet from any combustible materials, including your house, garage, deck rails and car. Never use a grill indoors or under a covered patio.”
Can you have a gas grill on a covered porch?
A gas grill gives you more options. You can place this type in a covered area, but don’t try to use it on a screened porch. Make sure you have at least a 9-foot ceiling–the higher, the better. Place the grill on an outside wall, and look for a spot with the best cross breeze to vent smoke.
Is it safe to have a gas grill on a wooden deck?
Leaky propane is highly ignitable and can lead to fires and explosions, often setting wooden deck floorboards and railings on fire. Residents must use caution when using propane-fueled grills on any surface, but concrete surfaces away from structures and trees are safer than wooden deck surfaces are.

The only type of grill that’s safe to use on a balcony is an electric grill. Gas grills and charcoal grills are only for the backyard or patio. It is not safe to use a charcoal or a gas grill on a balcony.
How much clearance do you need above a gas grill?
A minimum 60” [1524mm] clearance is required between the grilling surface and the overhead construction. When installed under combustible overhead construction, the area above the cooking surface of the grill must be covered with an exhaust hood.
Is it safe to have a charcoal grill on a deck?
While charcoal is safe inside your grill, high-speed winds can blow flaming charcoal onto your wooden deck and cause a serious fire that can quickly burn out of control.

Overall, we highly discourage operating any flame under a canopy tent. You can hurt yourself and damage your equipment. If you do decide to cook under a canopy tent, choose an area that is far enough away from any surroundings that if the whole shelter caught fire, the flame wouldn’t spread.
Can you put a grill outside?
There is no reason you cannot enjoy outdoor cooking any type of grill in cold weather. It is absolutely 100% okay to leave a gas grill outside in winter, under one condition: The temperature can’t be lower than -44 degrees F. Anything less is too cold for a propane grill to produce the vapor needed.

Yes, you can dry out wet lump and use it. Just lay it out in a single layer and let it dry in the sun. One thing to remember is if they’re not completely dry inside, it will take longer to light, and not burn as hot or evenly.
Can you put a gas grill under a pergola?
Pergolas and Barbecues – Don’t set your barbecue against any of the beams of the pergola as they may become brittle or warp from the heat of the grill. The best place for the barbecue is midway between posts at an outer edge of the structure. Trim vines and branches away from the barbecue.
